Improve Training
A transfer-pump isolation drill fails. The laminated job aid points to a valve that changed after a modification, the simulator valve is seized, and two operators hesitate at the same decision point. Management proposes a longer CBT. Your decision is to separate system defects from true learning gaps, correct the cause, and then test performance again.
Updated . Independent CSP-11 practice. Not BCSP-endorsed. No pass guarantee.
Decision rule
Improve training from evaluation evidence, not from a complaint.
Change the objective, practice, or job aid that failed. Do not only add hours.
In 20 seconds
- Improve training from evaluation evidence, not from a complaint.
- Improve training using evaluation data, learner feedback, incident trends, and audit findings.
- Kirkpatrick-style levels: reaction, learning, behavior, results — climb beyond smile sheets.
- Fix content that conflicts with field procedures.
How to apply Improve Training
THEORY: Kirkpatrick / Z490 improvement loop: Level 1–4 data → specific design change → re-test. CALC: If pass rate is 55% on the try-out, the gap is skill design, not attendance. FIELD: After a lockout event, the CAPA is ‘retake the slides.’ Rebuild the practical around the missed energy source. ASSESS: More annual hours with the same method is the trap.
Worked case
Wrong first move: Repeat last year’s deck. Correct move: Change the failed objective or practice; re-evaluate.

Same rule, different setting
After a failed well-control drill, the team wants to “improve training” by adding 40 slides and a retake of the same CBT. The isolation job aid is wrong and the prop is broken. You are the CSP. The question is what to change in the system — not how to lengthen the monologue.
After a failed rescue drill, the team wants to “improve training” by adding 40 slides and a retake of the same CBT. The haul-system job aid is wrong and the prop is broken. You are the CSP. The question is what to change in the system — not how to lengthen the monologue.
Picture / model
Improve training by diagnosing why required performance failed, correcting nontraining causes first, revising instruction or practice only for a demonstrated learning gap, and verifying the change with representative performance evidence.
Exam traps
Original SafePath contrasts for Improve Training. These are study traps, not recalled BCSP items.
| Trap | Correct read |
|---|---|
| Improve | Change the cause: aid, method, practice, design |
| Lengthen | More of the same — not improvement |
| Retake same CBT | Same evidence, same miss |
| Job aid / prop | Part of the performance system — fix them |
| Work redesign | Sometimes the “training problem” is the job |
Field move
Field decision: Fix the job aid and the prop, then structured practice with observation. Don’t lengthen the method that already failed..

Scenario 1 · Applied Scenario · CSP-11 D7.03
Failed rescue drill. Plan: add 40 slides and retake the same CBT. Job aid is wrong; prop is broken. Best improvement?
Best action: Fix the job aid and the prop, then structured practice with observation. Don’t lengthen the method that already failed.
Why: Evaluate the best response. Improve the cause the evidence named, then observe again. More of the failed method, a broken prop, or an impossible job aid is not an improvement. Last sentence: davit is undersized. Team adds a motivational poster hour. Comment?
Best action: Specify a correctly sized davit (design still open). Training hours do not raise capacity.

Workers say the job aid step 4 is physically impossible as written. Improve by?
Best action: Rewrite the aid and/or redesign the task so it is possible. Impossible steps are a design/aid problem.

Check before you leave
- ✓ Improve training using evaluation data, learner feedback, incident trends, and audit findings.
- ✓ Kirkpatrick-style levels: reaction, learning, behavior, results — climb beyond smile sheets.
- ✓ Fix content that conflicts with field procedures.
- ✓ Update after MoC and regulatory change.
- ✓ Remove modules that train the wrong control preference (PPE-first myths).
- ✓ Pilot changes before full rollout when risk is high.
