Adult Learning
Twenty experienced operators are scheduled for an 80-slide lockout/tagout lecture while a safe isolation trainer sits next door. The objective is to identify hazardous energy, apply the approved sequence, and verify isolation. You are the CSP: choose an adult-learning design that uses experience, practice, feedback, and transfer.

Decision rule
Adults learn work they will do, with practice and feedback.
Andragogy: relevance, experience, immediate use. Lecture-only fails transfer.
In 20 seconds
- Adults learn work they will do, with practice and feedback.
- Adults learn better with relevance, practice, feedback, and respect for experience.
- Objectives are observable performance statements.
- Mix explanation with application — not lecture-only for high-risk skills.
How to apply Adult Learning
THEORY: Z490.1 / adult-learning logic: objective, activity that looks like the task, feedback, then evaluation. CALC: None. FIELD: LOTO class is slides only. Add a mock isolation and a try-out before the card is issued. ASSESS: Longer lecture as the improvement is the trap.
Worked case
Wrong first move: Add slides. Correct move: Practice the job under supervision; evaluate the skill.
Why the rule holds

Same rule, different setting
A facilitator reads 80 slides to 20-year operators while the actual isolations they’ll make sit in the next unit. Adults are treated as empty-head children. You are the CSP. The question is andragogy: experience, problem, practice — not a monologue.

Picture / model
Experienced workers learn best when instruction is relevant to a real task, uses prior experience constructively, includes safe practice and feedback, and verifies transfer to work.
Exam traps
Original SafePath contrasts for Adult Learning. These are study traps, not recalled BCSP items.
| Trap | Correct read |
|---|---|
| Andragogy | Adult: why, experience, problem, immediate practice |
| Pedagogy default | Content-first lecture — wrong default for crafts |
| Skill | Needs practice and feedback — not a multiple-choice only |
| Knowledge | Can use explanation + check — still better with examples from their plant |
| Respect / voice | Adults contribute cases — they are not empty vessels |

80 slides read to experienced isolators; the valve is in the next room. Best adult-learning redesign?
Best action: Use their experience on the real/mocked isolation: why, map energies, practice lock/try-out, feedback. Slides support, they don’t replace practice.
Why: Evaluate the best response. Adult learning uses the worker's experience, a real problem, and practice with feedback. Food, slide count, or a workshop does not replace a missing control or a skill demonstration. 80 slides read to experienced isolators; the valve is in the next room. Best adult-learn…

Skill objective: perform a seal check. Team uses only a 5-item true/false. Issue?
Best action: A skill needs practice and observed performance. Knowledge items can support, they cannot be the only evidence.
Why: Evaluate the best response. Adult learning uses the worker's experience, a real problem, and practice with feedback. Journeymen’s shortcuts are ignored as “contamination.” Adult-learning comment?
Best action: Use experience as material: surface the shortcut, compare to the standard, practice the correct method. Ignoring it wastes the adult’s asset and hides the real gap.
