Adult Learning + Kirkpatrick Evaluation
Operators rate a new machine-guarding course highly, yet field observations still show hands entering the danger zone during jams. First restore the physical safeguard; then determine whether any residual gap is knowledge, skill, transfer, supervision, or work design.
Updated . Independent CSP-11 practice. Not BCSP-endorsed. No pass guarantee.
Decision rule
Kirkpatrick evaluation is four levels. Level 1 cannot prove Level 3.
Reaction ≠ learning ≠ behavior ≠ results.
In 20 seconds
- Kirkpatrick evaluation is four levels.
- Level 1 cannot prove Level 3.
- Adults: relevance, prior experience, apply soon, practice with feedback.
- Needs assessment before design.
How to apply Adult Learning + Kirkpatrick Evaluation
THEORY: Design the evaluation when you write the objective. Behavior evidence is observation or records after return to work. CALC: 12/15 pass a try-out = 80% Level 2. If next month the same error repeats, Level 3 failed. FIELD: Happy scores, same recordable mechanism. Report Level 3 failure; change the job or the practice. ASSESS: Using Level 1 as proof the plant is safer is the trap.
Worked case
Wrong first move: Frame the smile sheets. Correct move: Measure the level the objective promised.
Why the rule holds
Related: 76, 77, 74.
Same rule, different setting
Permit-to-work refresher feedback is excellent, but field verifications still find bypassed isolations and a defeated permissive. Restore and verify the protective function, then use learning and behavior evidence to locate the residual training or transfer gap.
Lift-plan orientation earns strong ratings, yet spotters still enter the load path and the exclusion zone is inconsistently established. Correct the work-zone control first, then test skill and observe on-the-job application.
Picture / model
Define the required work result → identify critical behavior → design realistic practice and support → evaluate Level 1 reaction, Level 2 learning, Level 3 behavior, and Level 4 results. Training never substitutes for an available higher-order control.
Exam traps
Original SafePath contrasts for Adult Learning + Kirkpatrick Evaluation. These are study traps, not recalled BCSP items.
| Trap | Correct read |
|---|---|
| Level 1 | Reaction / smile sheet |
| Level 2 | Learning — test or teach-back |
| Level 3 | Behavior on the job |
| Level 4 | Results — honest operational outcomes |
| Needs assessment | What performance gap |
Field move
Level 1 asks whether participants were satisfied. It does not measure job transfer or organizational results.
Scenarios
Scenario 1 · Fundamental · CSP-11 D7.06
What does Kirkpatrick Level 1 evaluate?
Best action: Reaction — satisfaction with the session.
Why: In the four-level model named by the stem, Level 1 is reaction: how participants felt about the session. Learning, on-the-job behavior, and organizational results are later levels.
Scenario 2 · Applied Scenario · CSP-11 D7.06
In Kirkpatrick's framework, what evidence does an end-of-class knowledge quiz primarily collect?
Best action: Level 2 learning evidence.
Why: Evaluate the best response. Shorten only content the job does not need. Keep the objectives required for safe performance. A name on a consensus training document is not the training system. This item does not quote that document. In Kirkpatrick's framework, what evidence does an end-of-class knowl…
Scenario 3 · Applied Scenario · CSP-11 D7.06
Supervisors observe correct LOTO try-out on the floor for 30 days. That metric is?
Best action: Level 3 behavior.
Why: Evaluate the best response. Shorten only content the job does not need. Keep the objectives required for safe performance. A name on a consensus training document is not the training system. This item does not quote that document. Supervisors observe correct LOTO try-out on the floor for 30 days. T…
If the stem says this
| Stem signal | Best direction |
|---|---|
| only smile sheets reported | that is Level 1 — not results |
| need to know if they can do it in class | Level 2 |
| need to know if they do it on the job | Level 3 observation |
| guard still missing | engineer first; train residual |
| work design punishes the correct act | fix the job |
| two answers work | higher hierarchy / system / design |
Check before you leave
- ✓ Adults: relevance, prior experience, apply soon, practice with feedback.
- ✓ Needs assessment before design.
- ✓ Kirkpatrick 1 reaction, 2 learning, 3 behavior, 4 results.
- ✓ Smile sheets are not results.
- ✓ On-the-job observation is Level 3, not Level 1.
- ✓ Training is administrative around open engineering.
