NIOSH RNLE Full Multiplier Walkthrough
Stem supplies LC and six multipliers. Multiply for RWL, divide load for LI, then redesign the job. Do not treat 51 lb as the RWL and do not call LI a PEL.
Updated . Independent CSP-11 practice. Not BCSP-endorsed. No pass guarantee.
Decision rule
Capstone RNLE: measure, multiply, interpret LI, then redesign.
A belt does not change a multiplier.
In 20 seconds
- Capstone RNLE: measure, multiply, interpret LI, then redesign.
- RWL = LC × HM × VM × DM × AM × FM × CM.
- LI = Load/RWL; LI>1 signals redesign.
- Multiply factors; do not average.
How to apply NIOSH RNLE Full Multiplier Walkthrough
THEORY: Same 51 lb LC. Frequency and coupling often forgotten. CALC: Given all seven factors, product then LI=load/RWL. FIELD: High frequency palletizing. Cut frequency or hoist. ASSESS: Stopping at ‘under 51’ is the trap.
Worked case
Wrong first move: Clear the lift because load < 51. Correct move: Compute RWL and LI; redesign if LI>1.
Why the rule holds
Related: 15, 70, 109.
Same rule, different setting
Drum on a skid: stem gives HM, VM, DM, AM, FM, CM. Compute, then move the drum closer or add a lift — not a back-belt talk.
Block placement with stem table values. Same product. Improve reach and frequency before coaching.
Picture / model
RWL=LC×HM×VM×DM×AM×FM×CM. LI=Load/RWL. Caption: multiply, pick closest, redesign the largest penalty.
Exam traps
Original SafePath contrasts for NIOSH RNLE Full Multiplier Walkthrough. These are study traps, not recalled BCSP items.
| Trap | Correct read |
|---|---|
| RWL | Recommended weight limit — product |
| LI | Load/RWL |
| LC | Load constant from stem (often 51 lb) |
| OSHA PEL | Legal limit — different tool |
| Multiplier | Stem factor typically ≤1 |
Field move
Lifting index ≈ 40 / 29.97 ≈ 1.33.
Scenarios
Scenario 1 · Applied Scenario · CSP-11 D6.04
If the recommended weight limit is 29.97 lb and the actual load is 40 lb, what is the lifting index?
Best action: ≈1.33
Why: LI = 40 / 29.97 ≈ 1.33. The inverted ratio is about 0.75. The load and the 51 lb constant are not the index.
Scenario 2 · Fundamental · CSP-11 D6.04
Why does the Revised NIOSH Lifting Equation multiply its six task factors rather than average them?
Best action: RWL is a product; each penalty multiplies.
Why: RWL = LC × HM × VM × DM × AM × FM × CM. The six task factors are multiplied. NIOSH does not tell the user to average them, and that average is not the lifting index.
Scenario 3 · Applied Scenario · CSP-11 D6.04
A lift has a lifting index of 1.33 and management proposes back belts as the fix. What is the stronger control decision?
Best action: Redesign load/geometry/frequency; belts are not a multiplier.
Why: Evaluate the best response. A lifting index above 1 means the job exceeds the recommended weight under the assumptions the stem states. Use the multipliers the problem supplies. The equation is not an OSHA permissible exposure limit. A back belt is not a multiplier. This item does not quote the lif…
If the stem says this
| Stem signal | Best direction |
|---|---|
| multipliers given | multiply for RWL then LI |
| LI>1 | redesign job — load or geometry |
| back belts proposed | reject as primary |
| 23 kg mixed into a 51 lb stem | do not mix units |
| equation does not apply per stem | say so and redesign qualitatively |
| two answers work | higher hierarchy / system / design |
Check before you leave
- ✓ RWL = LC × HM × VM × DM × AM × FM × CM.
- ✓ LI = Load/RWL; LI>1 signals redesign.
- ✓ Multiply factors; do not average.
- ✓ Use only stem-supplied factors/tables.
- ✓ RNLE is not an OSHA PEL.
- ✓ Improve geometry/load/frequency before coaching.
