NIOSH RNLE Multipliers
NIOSH RNLE with stem-supplied multipliers — never pirate the handbook tables; compute RWL and LI from given factors.
Updated . Independent CSP-11 practice. Not BCSP-endorsed. No pass guarantee.
Decision rule
NIOSH lab: every multiplier ≤1. Missing data means you cannot finish RWL.
Do not invent HM or FM.
In 20 seconds
- NIOSH lab: every multiplier ≤1.
- Missing data means you cannot finish RWL.
- NIOSH RNLE: RWL = LC x HM x VM x DM x AM x FM x CM.
- LI = Load/RWL; LI>1 indicates increased risk.
How to apply NIOSH RNLE Multipliers
THEORY: RWL=51 x HM x VM x DM x AM x FM x CM. LI=load/RWL. CALC: If only HM=0.8 given, stop or use only given factors. Full product when all given. TI-30XS: 51x each factor. FIELD: Far reach, low origin. Measure H and V; do not guess. ASSESS: Assuming all multipliers=1 when the photo shows a stoop is the trap.
Worked case
Wrong first move: Use 51 lb raw. Correct move: Measure, multiply, interpret LI.
Why the rule holds
Related: 15, 70, 126.
Same rule, different setting
Drum handling on a skid: stem gives HM,VM,DM,AM,FM,CM — compute RWL and lifting index.
Block placement: same method with stem table values.
Picture / model
RWL=LC×Π(multipliers); LI=Load/RWL.
Exam traps
Original SafePath contrasts for NIOSH RNLE Multipliers. These are study traps, not recalled BCSP items.
| Trap | Correct read |
|---|---|
| RWL | Recommended weight limit |
| LI | Load/RWL |
| LC | Load constant from stem |
| OSHA PEL | Legal limit — different |
| Multiplier | Stem-supplied factor ≤1 typically |
Field move
51 × 0.89 × 0.87 × 0.85 × 0.95 × 0.94 × 1.00 ≈ 29.97 lb.
Scenarios
Scenario 1 · Applied Scenario · CSP-11 D6.04
You are the CSP reviewing a live decision at a Gulf Coast chemical terminal. Operations proposes a convenience path. With LC=51 lb and multipliers 0.89, 0.87, 0.85, 0.95, 0.94, and 1.00, what is the approximate RWL?
Best action: ≈29.97 lb
Why: The recommended weight limit is the product of the load constant and the multipliers given in the stem. That product is about 29.97 lb. The load constant alone, a round 40 lb load, and 1 lb are not the product.
Scenario 2 · Applied Scenario · CSP-11 D6.04
You are the CSP reviewing a live decision at a refinery coker outage. Operations proposes a convenience path. For a 40 lb load and RWL≈29.97 lb, what lifting index results?
Best action: ≈1.33
Why: The lifting index is the actual load divided by the recommended weight limit: 40 / 29.97 ≈ 1.33. The inverted ratio is about 0.75. The load and the RWL are the inputs, not the index.
Scenario 3 · Applied Scenario · CSP-11 D6.04
You are the CSP reviewing a live decision at a bridge deck pour laydown yard. Operations proposes a convenience path. What does a lifting index greater than one indicate within the RNLE's scope?
Best action: Job exceeds RWL under stated assumptions
Why: Evaluate the best response. A lifting index above 1 means the job exceeds the recommended weight under the assumptions the stem states. Use the multipliers the problem supplies. The equation is not an OSHA permissible exposure limit. A back belt is not a multiplier. This item does not quote the lif…
If the stem says this
| Stem signal | Best direction |
|---|---|
| LI greater than 1 | redesign to improve multipliers/reduce load |
| only coaching offered | change job geometry/frequency |
| back belts proposed as fix | reject as primary |
| two answers work | higher hierarchy / system / design |
| numbers for multipliers given | compute RWL/LI carefully |
Check before you leave
- ✓ NIOSH RNLE: RWL = LC x HM x VM x DM x AM x FM x CM.
- ✓ LI = Load/RWL; LI>1 indicates increased risk.
- ✓ Improve multipliers by redesign — not only coaching.
- ✓ Asymmetry, frequency, and vertical location often dominate.
- ✓ Team lifts and aids change the job.
- ✓ Calculator: multiply carefully; pick closest.
