Ventilation Q=V(10X²+A) + Dilution/VP Lab
A hood sits off the plume. You need Q=V(10X²+A), a dilution ln, and VP=(V/4005)² — not Q=VA alone, not log10, and not a missing square.
Updated . Independent CSP-11 practice. Not BCSP-endorsed. No pass guarantee.
Decision rule
Ventilation lab: Q=VA, then ask whether that Q is capture or dilution.
Face velocity is not transport velocity.
In 20 seconds
- Ventilation lab: Q=VA, then ask whether that Q is capture or dilution.
- Unflanged: Q=V(10X²+A), X in feet.
- Flanged 7.5 only if the stem says flanged.
- Dilution/purge uses ln, not log10.
How to apply Ventilation Q=V(10X²+A) + Dilution/VP Lab
THEORY: Measure at the right plane. Make-up air must exist. CALC: 200 fpm x 1.5 ft2 = 300 cfm. TI-30XS: 200x1.5=. FIELD: Hood starving because make-up was blocked. Open make-up. ASSESS: Measuring room air and calling it capture is the trap.
Worked case
Wrong first move: Quote a random anemometer number. Correct move: Measure at the plane; compute Q=VA.
Why the rule holds
Related: 81.
Same rule, different setting
Skid hot-work hood offset from the plume: distance tax, purge ln, duct VP. Inches to feet; ln not log10.
Tent welding hood offset: X in feet, unflanged unless the stem says flanged, make-up air for the tent.

Exam traps
Original SafePath contrasts for Ventilation Q=V(10X²+A) + Dilution/VP Lab. These are study traps, not recalled BCSP items.
| Trap | Correct read |
|---|---|
| Q=VA | Face or duct only |
| Q=V(10X²+A) | Unflanged capture with distance |
| Q=V(7.5X²+A) | Flanged only if stem says |
| ln | Natural log on purge |
| log10 | FORM trap |
Field move
Q = 100 × (10 × 1² + 0.5) = 1,050 cfm.
Scenarios
Scenario 1 · Applied Scenario · CSP-11 D6.01
For an unflanged hood, V = 100 ft/min, X = 1 ft, and A = 0.5 ft². Using Q = V(10X² + A), what airflow is required?
Best action: 1,050 cfm
Why: 10X² + A = 10 + 0.5 = 10.5. Times 100 ft/min that is 1,050 cfm. Using VA only, a flanged coefficient the stem did not give, or leaving X in inches changes the flow.
Scenario 2 · Applied Scenario · CSP-11 D6.01
Purge 10,000 ft³ at 2,000 cfm from 200 to 20 ppm. t=-(V/Q)ln(C2/C1) ≈?
Best action: ≈11.51 min
Why: V/Q = 5 minutes and C2/C1 = 0.1. Then −5 ln(0.1) ≈ 11.51 minutes. Five minutes is the common-log result. Two minutes is not the purge time, and 11.51 hours uses the wrong unit.
Scenario 3 · Applied Scenario · CSP-11 D6.01
At 2,000 ft/min and standard air density, what is the approximate velocity pressure in inches of water using VP = (V/4005)²?
Best action: ≈0.249 in. wg
Why: (2,000/4,005)² ≈ 0.249 inches of water. The unsquared ratio is about 0.50. The velocity and the constant 4,005 are not the pressure.
If the stem says this
| Stem signal | Best direction |
|---|---|
| unflanged distance X given | Q=V(10X²+A), X in feet |
| flanged in the last sentence | use 7.5 not 10 |
| purge from C1 to C2 | t=-(V/Q)ln(C2/C1) |
| velocity pressure asked | square V/4005 |
| chemical can still change | substitute |
| two answers work | higher hierarchy / system / design |
Check before you leave
- ✓ Unflanged: Q=V(10X²+A), X in feet.
- ✓ Flanged 7.5 only if the stem says flanged.
- ✓ Dilution/purge uses ln, not log10.
- ✓ VP=(V/4005)² — square it.
- ✓ Capture at source beats room dilution.
- ✓ Make-up air; rebalance after change.
