Noise Dose OSHA 5 vs NIOSH 3 Lab
A 95 dBA OSHA item and an 88 dBA NIOSH item in the same sitting. Matched pairs only. Then specify the quieter machine if it is still on the bid.
Updated . Independent CSP-11 practice. Not BCSP-endorsed. No pass guarantee.
Decision rule
Noise dose adds when levels change. OSHA and NIOSH doses are different.
100% OSHA dose is not 100% NIOSH dose.
In 20 seconds
- Noise dose adds when levels change.
- OSHA and NIOSH doses are different.
- OSHA: 90 dBA, 5 dB exchange, AL 85.
- NIOSH: 85 dBA, 3 dB exchange.
How to apply Noise Dose OSHA 5 vs NIOSH 3 Lab
THEORY: Dose = 100 x Σ(Ci/Ti). Ti from the exchange rate in force. CALC: Two hours at 95 dBA OSHA: T=4 h, partial dose=50%. TI-30XS: 2/4 x100=50. FIELD: Split shift 90 and 95. Add doses; do not average dBA. ASSESS: Averaging 90 and 95 to 92.5 is the trap.
Worked case
Wrong first move: Average the dBA. Correct move: Convert each level to allowed T; add doses.
Why the rule holds
Related: 64, 83.
Same rule, different setting
Compressor skid 95 dBA. OSHA T=4 h. Do not grab NIOSH 3 dB. Quiet the source if the model is not purchased.
Site generator 95 dBA. Same OSHA 4 h. Distance, enclosure, and a quieter rental beat a case of muffs as primary.
Picture / model
Two columns: OSHA 90/5 vs NIOSH 85/3. T halves every exchange step. Caption: never cross the columns; then hierarchy.
Exam traps
Original SafePath contrasts for Noise Dose OSHA 5 vs NIOSH 3 Lab. These are study traps, not recalled BCSP items.
| Trap | Correct read |
|---|---|
| OSHA PEL package | 90 dBA, 5 dB, AL 85 |
| NIOSH REL package | 85 dBA, 3 dB |
| Action level | 50% dose trigger — not the PEL |
| Exchange rate | dB for doubling of dose |
| HCP | Admin/medical residual |
Field move
One 5 dB step above 90 dBA halves 8 hours to 4 hours.
Scenarios
Scenario 1 · Applied Scenario · CSP-11 D6.01
Under the OSHA 5-dB exchange rate, how long is the permitted exposure at 95 dBA if the criterion is 90 dBA for 8 hours?
Best action: 4 hours
Why: Under OSHA's 5 dB exchange rate, the allowable time at 95 dBA is 8 / 2^((95−90)/5) = 8/2 = 4 hours. Eight hours is the 90 dBA criterion duration. Two hours would be another exchange step.
Scenario 2 · Applied Scenario · CSP-11 D6.01
Under the NIOSH 3-dB exchange rate, how long is the recommended exposure at 88 dBA if the criterion is 85 dBA for 8 hours?
Best action: 4 hours
Why: Under the NIOSH 3 dB exchange, the recommended time at 88 dBA is 8 / 2^((88−85)/3) = 8/2 = 4 hours. Eight hours is the 85 dBA criterion. An OSHA 5 dB step does not describe this 3 dB pair.
Scenario 3 · Applied Scenario · CSP-11 D6.01
Under the OSHA 5-dB exchange rate, what is the dose for 2 hours at 95 dBA (T = 4 hours) plus 2 hours at 90 dBA (T = 8 hours)?
Best action: 75%
Why: The allowable time at 95 dBA is 4 hours and at 90 dBA is 8 hours. Dose = 100 × (2/4 + 2/8) = 100 × 0.75 = 75 percent. One hundred percent would be a full shift at the limit. Fifty percent is only the 95 dBA part.
If the stem says this
| Stem signal | Best direction |
|---|---|
| OSHA 95 dBA | T=4 h |
| NIOSH 88 dBA | T=4 h |
| mixed levels | sum C/T with matching table |
| TWA from dose | stem formula; log10 unless told otherwise |
| quieter machine still on the bid | specify it |
| two answers work | higher hierarchy / system / design |
Check before you leave
- ✓ OSHA: 90 dBA, 5 dB exchange, AL 85.
- ✓ NIOSH: 85 dBA, 3 dB exchange.
- ✓ T=8/2^((L-criterion)/exchange).
- ✓ Dose D=100×Σ(C/T) with matching T.
- ✓ Do not mix pairs.
- ✓ TWA-from-dose uses the stem’s log form (often log10).
