Leadership

The VP records a “safety first” video, then emails “make the shipment — we’ll fix the interlock next quarter.” You are the CSP. The question is what leadership looks like when it costs production.

Updated . Independent CSP-11 practice. Not BCSP-endorsed. No pass guarantee.

Decision rule

Leadership is the resource and consequence pattern people actually see.

Visible support means time, money, and backing stop-work. A speech is not leadership.

In 20 seconds

  • Leadership is the resource and consequence pattern people actually see.
  • Leadership allocates attention, money, and consequences — not slogans.
  • Visible engagement on high-risk work beats banquet speeches.
  • Leaders must receive bad news safely or reporting dies.

How to apply Leadership

THEORY: ISO 45001 leadership and worker participation. Production pressure that punishes delay will defeat any procedure. CALC: None. FIELD: Supervisor praised for shipping with a defeated interlock. Reset the consequence: stop the line, restore the guard, coach the supervisor. ASSESS: A town-hall video after that event, with the interlock still defeated, is the wrong first move.

Worked case

Wrong first move: another values email. Correct move: fund the control and protect the person who stopped the job.

Why the rule holds

Same rule, different setting

The asset manager records a “safety first” video, then radios “keep the well online — we’ll fix the ESD next quarter.” You are the CSP. The question is what leadership looks like when it costs production.

The PM records a “safety first” video, then texts “keep hanging iron — we’ll fix the cable next quarter.” You are the CSP. The question is what leadership looks like when it costs production.

Picture / model

Judge management leadership through a failed-safeguard decision: prevent exposure, align decision rights with resources, obtain worker input and require verified restoration. Interpret restoration-time summaries without mistaking repair speed for safe operation.

Exam traps

Original SafePath contrasts for Leadership. These are study traps, not recalled BCSP items.

TrapCorrect read
Video / posterCommunication — not a decision under scarcity
Accountable leaderThe role formally assigned authority and resources for the decision
CSPRole depends on assigned governance; expertise alone does not create operating authority
InsuranceFinancing — not leadership of controls

Field move

A safety-first video is not the priority when the email says ship with the interlock defeated.

Scenarios

Scenario 1 · Fundamental · CSP-11 D2.12

VP video says safety first. Same-day email: ship with the interlock defeated. Which is the leadership evidence?

Best action: The email: it directs work with a defeated interlock and reveals the operational priority.

Why: Evaluate the best response. The video says safety first. The same-day email says ship with the interlock defeated. The best leadership evidence is the email. It directs work with a defeated interlock and shows the operational priority. The video is not the evidence just because top management signe…

Scenario 2 · Applied Scenario · CSP-11 D2.12

Leader wants only FMEA RPN slides in management review, dropping MoC temps and stop-work metrics. Problem?

Best action: Review critical barrier impairments, temporary MoC actions and stop-work feedback alongside the FMEA results.

Why: Evaluate the best response. The leader wants only ranking slides and wants to drop temporary changes and stop-work metrics. The best review keeps critical barrier impairments, temporary change actions, and stop-work feedback alongside the ranking. An average score does not replace worker reports. R…

Scenario 3 · Applied Scenario · CSP-11 D2.12

Last sentence: the VP is airborne; the superintendent is the only person who can stop the job. Interlock failed. Best remaining leadership act?

Best action: The superintendent uses their stop authority now, makes exposure safe and arranges verified restoration.

Why: Evaluate the best response. The executive is airborne and the superintendent is the only person who can stop the job. The interlock failed. The best remaining act is that the superintendent uses that stop authority now, makes the exposure safe, and arranges verified restoration. Keeping the unit ru…
