ISO 14001
A coatings plant already uses ISO 14001 for its environmental management system. After a solvent hose leak, a manager proposes using the site's environmental-aspect score to decide worker respiratory and ignition controls as well. As the CSP, decide which parts of the response belong to ISO 14001 and which require a separate OH&S hazard assessment.

Decision rule
ISO 14001 manages environmental aspects and impacts. A recycling poster is not an EMS.
Identify aspects, evaluate significance, set operational controls and emergency preparedness for those impacts.
In 20 seconds
- ISO 14001 manages environmental aspects and impacts.
- A recycling poster is not an EMS.
- ISO 14001 is environmental management-system PDCA: context, leadership, planning, support, operation, evaluation, improvement.
- Aspects and impacts drive objectives and operational controls.
How to apply ISO 14001
THEORY: ISO 14001 PDCA. An aspect is how the activity interacts with the environment; an impact is the change that follows. Significant aspects get controls and monitoring. CALC: None unless a stem gives emission or waste quantities — use given figures only. FIELD: New solvent washer added with no aspect review. Open EMS change control before start-up. ASSESS: Counting office paper recycling while ignoring a solvent aspect is the trap.
Worked case
Wrong first move: celebrate a recycling rate and skip the new washer. Correct move: aspect-impact review, operational control, and emergency plan for the solvent.

Same rule, different setting
The gas plant already has ISO 14001. Corporate says use it for personnel safety because “EHS is EHS.” You are the CSP. The question is what ISO 14001 is for — and what it is not.
The project already has ISO 14001 for stormwater. The GC says use it for personnel safety because “EHS is EHS.” You are the CSP. The question is what ISO 14001 is for — and what it is not.
Picture / model
Apply ISO 14001:2026 as an environmental management-system requirements standard: trace activities, products and services to environmental aspects and impacts, connect significant issues to obligations and operational controls, consider relevant life-cycle stages, and keep worker-safety risk analysis distinct.
Exam traps
Original SafePath contrasts for ISO 14001. These are study traps, not recalled BCSP items.
| Trap | Correct read |
|---|---|
| Aspect / impact | 14001 environmental significance |
| Hazard / OHS risk | 45001 / Z10 — people |
| Life-cycle perspective | 14001 view from raw material through disposal |
| Integrated SMS | Shared PDCA chassis, separate risk engines |

A larger spill kit is not prevention at the source while substitution is open.
Scenarios
Scenario 1 · Applied Scenario · CSP-11 D2.08
Significant aspect is solvent VOC and spill. A waterborne substitute is open. Draft control is a larger spill kit. Best 14001-consistent action?
Best action: Substitute to waterborne (prevent at source); kit and containment for residual.
Why: Evaluate the best response. The significant aspect is solvent VOC and spill, and a waterborne substitute is open. The best action substitutes at the source. The kit and containment cover what remains. This item does not quote the environmental standard. A spill kit as the primary prevention leaves…
Scenario 2 · Applied Scenario · CSP-11 D2.08
You are the CSP reviewing a live decision at a hospital utility plant shutdown. Operations proposes a convenience path. Which action best applies the ISO 14001 life-cycle perspective to the site's environmental aspects?
Best action: Considering environmental issues from raw material, design, use, and end-of-life, not just the stack today.
Why: Evaluate the best response. The best application of the life-cycle perspective considers environmental issues from raw material, design, use, and end of life, not only the stack today. This item does not quote the standard. Sampling only this week's outfall misses upstream and end-of-life issues. A…
Scenario 3 · Applied Scenario · CSP-11 D2.08
Integrated SMS documentation is proposed. Which is still required?
Best action: Distinct environmental aspect evaluation and OHS hazard/hierarchy evaluation, even if PDCA meetings are shared.
Why: Evaluate the best response. Integrated documentation is proposed. The best remaining requirement is a distinct environmental aspect evaluation and a distinct occupational hazard and hierarchy evaluation, even if the meetings are shared. This item does not quote the standards. One risk method for de…
If the stem says this
| Stem signal | Best direction |
|---|---|
| aspects/impacts are not identified | complete aspects/impacts before objectives theater |
| only spill response is funded while prevention is open | prefer prevention/source control |
| compliance obligations are unknown | determine and evaluate obligations |
| two answers work | higher hierarchy / system / design |
| a contractor process causes the aspect | control or influence the outsourced process |
Check before you leave
- ✓ ISO 14001 is environmental management-system PDCA: context, leadership, planning, support, operation, evaluation, improvement.
- ✓ Aspects and impacts drive objectives and operational controls.
- ✓ Compliance obligations must be determined and evaluated.
- ✓ Life-cycle perspective appears in planning — not only end-of-pipe.
- ✓ Emergency preparedness covers environmental incidents too.
- ✓ Do not confuse EMS paperwork with pollution-prevention hierarchy.
