Ethics & Professional Judgment Scenarios
A vice president asks you to sign a pre-startup review you did not perform while a high-level shutdown function remains bypassed and a production incentive depends on startup. Preserve truthful records, disclose the conflict, communicate the live hazard, and route the technical decision to the competent and authorized people.

Decision rule
Ethics scenarios: choose the action that protects people and the integrity of the record.
Pressure to ship, sign, or silence is the usual stem.
In 20 seconds
- Ethics scenarios: choose the action that protects people and the integrity of the record.
- People and truthful risk communication outrank convenience and gain.
- Do not sign what you did not verify.
- Do not practice beyond competence.
How to apply Ethics & Professional Judgment Scenarios
THEORY: Refuse unverified certification. Escalate an imminent hazard. Keep medical and identifiable data on a need-to-know path. CALC: None. FIELD: Manager asks you to delete a lab result that exceeds the PEL ‘until we re-sample.’ Keep the result; control the source; resample as extra evidence, not as erasure. ASSESS: Quiet edit of data is the trap.
Worked case
Wrong first move: Delete the result. Correct move: Preserve the record; fix the exposure.
Why the rule holds
Related: 96, 32.
Same rule, different setting
During a tank-farm startup window, a high-level shutdown is temporarily bypassed and you are asked to backdate the review. Decline the false record, confirm the bypass status, notify the accountable startup authority, and require the condition to be resolved through the site's technical and change-control process.
A superintendent asks you to sign yesterday's excavation inspection without seeing the excavation so concrete placement can start. Do not certify an inspection you did not perform; communicate the unresolved exposure, inspect within your competence and authority, and escalate through the defined project process.
Picture / model
Facts verified → competence and authority → conflict disclosure → hazard communication → technical/change-control resolution → documented verification. Production pressure never creates evidence.
