Fire Hydraulics + Mixture LFL Lab
A 50/50 vapor mix and a 6-inch line at 2000 fpm land in the same sitting. Do not average LFL. Do not use diameter as area. Then ask whether the fuel can still leave.
Updated . Independent CSP-11 practice. Not BCSP-endorsed. No pass guarantee.
Decision rule
This lab combines hydraulics and LFL. Do one model at a time.
Do not average a pipe loss with a mole fraction.
In 20 seconds
- This lab combines hydraulics and LFL.
- Do one model at a time.
- Q=VA with r in feet for πr².
- LFL_mix = 1/Σ(y_i/LFL_i).
How to apply Fire Hydraulics + Mixture LFL Lab
THEORY: Pick the question: flow/pressure or mixture flammability. CALC: Use the given model only. LFL mix as 108; pipe as 103. FIELD: Stem asks mix LFL; student computes gpm. Wrong model. ASSESS: Mixing units across models is the trap.
Worked case
Wrong first move: Blend the formulas. Correct move: Choose the law that matches the asked quantity.
Why the rule holds
Related: 103, 108.
Same rule, different setting
A compressor skid with mixed hydrocarbon vapors and a firewater branch. Le Chatelier first; Q=VA second; substitution of the fuel still wins if open.
A tented coating area with mixed solvents and a 1.5-inch hose stream question. Convert inches. Do not average LFL. Remove fuel/ignition if still open.
Picture / model
Left: A=πr² with r in feet, Q=VA. Right: LFL_mix=1/Σ(y_i/LFL_i). Caption: closest value; then higher prevention if open.
Exam traps
Original SafePath contrasts for Fire Hydraulics + Mixture LFL Lab. These are study traps, not recalled BCSP items.
| Trap | Correct read |
|---|---|
| Q=VA | Flow from velocity and area |
| Le Chatelier LFL | 1/Σ(y/LFL) — not an average |
| Hazen-Williams | Use the C and form the stem gives |
| Arithmetic mean LFL | FORM trap |
| Diameter as radius | UNIT/FORM trap |
Field move
Radius is 0.25 ft. Q ≈ π(0.25)² × 2,000 ≈ 393 cfm.
Scenarios
Scenario 1 · Applied Scenario · CSP-11 D4.03
A round duct has a 6-inch inside diameter and an air velocity of 2,000 ft/min. What is its approximate airflow in ft³/min?
Best action: ≈393 cfm (r=0.25 ft)
Why: A 6-inch inside diameter is a 0.25 ft radius. Area is π × 0.25² ≈ 0.1963 ft². Times 2,000 ft/min that is about 393 cfm. Using the diameter as a length, or a 0.5 ft radius, changes the area.
Scenario 2 · Fundamental · CSP-11 D4.03
Why should a two-component mixture's LFL not be calculated as the simple average of its component LFLs?
Best action: Le Chatelier uses the reciprocal of the fraction-weighted 1/LFL terms.
Why: A two-component mixture LFL in this model is the reciprocal of Σ(yi/LFLi), not the arithmetic average. OSHA does not forbid decimals, an LFL is not a PEL, and the average is not always the lower value.
Scenario 3 · Applied Scenario · CSP-11 D4.03
Hazen-Williams C=100 given. Candidate uses C=140 from memory. Miss type?
Best action: Used a constant the stem did not give.
Why: The stem gives Hazen-Williams C = 100. Replacing it with 140 from memory uses a constant the problem did not supply. C is not a hierarchy row, a recordkeeping clock, or a TLV.
If the stem says this
| Stem signal | Best direction |
|---|---|
| mixture LFL with fractions given | Le Chatelier, not an average |
| velocity and diameter given | convert to feet, πr², Q=VA |
| C-factor given | use that C, not a remembered one |
| nonflammable process still open | substitute before more gpm |
| closest value among options | compute then pick nearest |
| two answers work | higher hierarchy / system / design |
Check before you leave
- ✓ Q=VA with r in feet for πr².
- ✓ LFL_mix = 1/Σ(y_i/LFL_i).
- ✓ Do not average LFLs.
- ✓ Use stem C-factors and constants; pick closest.
- ✓ Elevation ≈ 0.433 psi/ft water when in US customary.
- ✓ Suppression is not prevention.
