PIT Stability / Moment
PIT tip-over is a line-of-action leaving the stability triangle — moment arithmetic, not folklore speed alone.
Updated . Independent CSP-11 practice. Not BCSP-endorsed. No pass guarantee.
Decision rule
Moments overturn when the load arm beats the resisting arm.
A spotter does not add moment capacity.
In 20 seconds
- Moments overturn when the load arm beats the resisting arm.
- PIT stability: load moment vs capacity; load center and height matter.
- Attachments change capacity — use the right chart.
- Lateral tip and longitudinal tip modes.
How to apply PIT Stability / Moment
THEORY: M=F x d. Sum moments about the tip point. CALC: Load 2000 lbf at 4 ft → 8000 ft-lbf. If resist is 7000, it tips. TI-30XS: 2000x4=. FIELD: Suspended load on a slope. Refuse the path. ASSESS: Verbal ‘it looks stable’ is the trap.
Worked case
Wrong first move: Send a spotter. Correct move: Compare moments; stay inside the envelope.
Why the rule holds
Related: 13, 14.
Same rule, different setting
Warehouse PIT with offset load on a ramp: compute moments from stem forces/distances.
Rough-terrain fork use: stability triangle + moment arms from stem.
Picture / model
Forces×arms → net moment; keep resultant inside triangle.
Exam traps
Original SafePath contrasts for PIT Stability / Moment. These are study traps, not recalled BCSP items.
| Trap | Correct read |
|---|---|
| Stability triangle | Geometric base |
| Moment | Force×arm |
| Nameplate capacity | Not net for all configs |
| Ramp effect | Shifts line of action |
| Offset load | Adds overturning |
Field move
Moment = 500 lb × 4 ft = 2,000 ft·lb.
Scenarios
Scenario 1 · Applied Scenario · CSP-11 D1.06
A 500 lb force acts 4 ft from the pivot. What is the overturning moment?
Best action: 2,000 ft·lb
Why: The overturning moment is force times the stated distance: 500 × 4 = 2,000 ft·lb. Dividing, adding, or reporting zero does not follow that product.
Scenario 2 · Applied Scenario · CSP-11 D1.06
What does it mean if the combined center of gravity's vertical projection falls outside the stability triangle?
Best action: Tip-over tendency
Why: Core Rule: Geometry. Calculation Steps: Stability. Standards Cited: PIT. Why Each Distractor Fails: Tip-over tendency: Correct: Tips | Guaranteed safe: Fails: False | Only EMR issue: Fails: FIN | Only noise issue: Fails: Wrong
Scenario 3 · Applied Scenario · CSP-11 D1.06
Can people ride on forklift forks merely because the nameplate gives a load capacity?
Best action: Not automatically authorized — config matters
Why: Core Rule: Config/net capacity. Calculation Steps: Misuse. Standards Cited: PIT/aerial contrast. Why Each Distractor Fails: Not automatically authorized — config matters: Correct: Config | Always OK: Fails: False | Always increases capacity: Fails: False | Sets K for light curtains: Fails: Wrong do…
If the stem says this
| Stem signal | Best direction |
|---|---|
| load center extended | derate/use correct chart — may not lift |
| attachment installed | use attachment capacity chart |
| pedestrians in aisle | engineered separation |
| two answers work | higher hierarchy / system / design |
| numbers for moment given | compute and compare to capacity |
Check before you leave
- ✓ PIT stability: load moment vs capacity; load center and height matter.
- ✓ Attachments change capacity — use the right chart.
- ✓ Lateral tip and longitudinal tip modes.
- ✓ Speed, turns, and ramps reduce stability margin.
- ✓ Pedestrian separation still hierarchy-critical.
- ✓ Do not exceed chart — hope is not engineering.
