How long is the CSP exam?
The CSP exam is 5.5 hours long. That is BCSP's published examination time for the Certified Safety Professional. This page explains what fills those 5.5 hours, how breaks work, and how to pace yourself, plus how long the whole CSP process takes from application to result. Do breaks count toward the 5.5 hours?
Yes. BCSP says you can take self-scheduled breaks, but the exam clock does not stop. You must stay in the building, or the part of it Pearson VUE controls, and you cannot access your personal belongings during the exam. So a 10-minute break is 10 minutes less for questions. Plan one or two short breaks at set points, not whenever you feel stuck.
What happens before the first question
Once you are seated, BCSP says you will see a security and confidentiality agreement and the BCSP Code of Ethics, which you must accept to continue. You then have the option of a brief tutorial on the testing screen. Arrive early enough that check-in stress does not eat into your focus. Our exam-day checklist covers the rest.
How to pace 330 minutes
Work out your per-question budget from the item count in your own BCSP authorization:
Minutes per question = (330 − planned break minutes − 20 minutes reserved for review) ÷ number of items
Then convert it to checkpoints. For example, split the sitting into four blocks and write the target clock time for the end of each block on the whiteboard BCSP says you will be given. Habits that protect your time:
- Answer every item on the first pass. There is no reason to leave a blank, and the unscored items are not identified, so treat every item as if it counts.
- Flag long calculation stems and come back. Calculation stems, not unfamiliar topics, are where most candidates lose time.
- Practice on a TI-30XS-style calculator, because that is what the on-screen tool emulates. Use our calculator and formula drills.
- Rehearse full length at least twice. A 5.5-hour sitting is an endurance test as much as a knowledge test. Try a full timed CSP mock exam.

Where the time goes by domain
The CSP11 blueprint weights tell you roughly how your exam time is spent:
| Domain | Weight | Share of 330 minutes |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Advanced Application of Safety Principles | 25% | about 83 min |
| 2. Program Management | 25% | about 83 min |
| 3. Risk Management | 15% | about 50 min |
| 6. Occupational Health and Applied Science | 10% | about 33 min |
| 7. Training | 10% | about 33 min |
| 4. Emergency Management | 9% | about 30 min |
| 5. Environmental Management | 6% | about 20 min |
The minute shares are SafePath's arithmetic, not BCSP figures. Domain 6 calculation items usually take longer than their weight suggests. See the CSP-11 blueprint for the task list.

How long does the whole CSP process take?
The exam is one day. Becoming a CSP takes longer:
- Experience. Four years of qualifying SH&E experience is required before you are eligible.
- Eligibility window. After BCSP approves your application, you have one year to schedule and pass. A one-time, one-year extension is available for a fee within 60 days of the deadline.
- Retakes. A new attempt must be at least six weeks after your last one.
- Results. Available when you submit, so there is no waiting period after the exam.
How long you study is up to you. SafePath's illustrative budget is in our study-time guide. The full step-by-step route is in how to get CSP certification.

How long is the CSP certification good for?
The CSP stays active as long as you maintain it. BCSP charges an annual renewal fee ($185 for the CSP) and requires 25 recertification points every five years, including 0.5 points from ethics courses.
