BCP

A process-unit fire is stabilized, but leadership calls the evacuation roster “the BCP” and wants order entry restored before the firewater power feed is proven. As the CSP, separate emergency response from continuity, rank recovery dependencies, and decide what may restart safely.

Updated . Independent CSP-11 practice. Not BCSP-endorsed. No pass guarantee.

Decision rule

BCP keeps critical functions after disruption. An ERP is not automatically a BCP.

BIA names what must continue and how soon.

In 20 seconds

  • BCP keeps critical functions after disruption.
  • An ERP is not automatically a BCP.
  • Separate emergency response, continuity and disaster recovery.
  • Rank functions by tolerated outage and safety dependencies.

How to apply BCP

THEORY: ISO 22301 logic: BIA, recovery time, recovery point, workarounds, test. CALC: If RTO is 4 h and restore takes 12 h, the gap is 8 h. FIELD: IT outage with no manual batch-ticket path. Write the workaround before the next outage. ASSESS: Calling a fire drill a BCP test is the trap.

Worked case

Wrong first move: File last year’s BCP. Correct move: Run BIA, set RTO, test the workaround.

Why the rule holds

Related: 47, 115.

Same rule, different setting

After a separator fire, leadership wants “the BCP” to be the muster list, and they want nominations restored before firewater is. You are the CSP. The question is what business continuity actually is, and where utilities and cyber sit.

After a crane incident, leadership wants “the BCP” to be the assembly list, and they want billing restored before temp-power and tower-crane weather limits are. You are the CSP. The question is what business continuity actually is, and where utilities and cyber sit.

Picture / model

Use a business impact analysis to prioritize time-sensitive functions, map their people/utility/data/supplier dependencies, set recovery targets, and restore operations only when safety prerequisites are verified.

Exam traps

Original SafePath contrasts for BCP. These are study traps, not recalled BCSP items.

TrapCorrect read
ERP / ICSLife safety and incident tactics now
BCPRestore critical functions to RTO/RPO after or beside the incident
RTOTime until the function must be up
RPOMaximum tolerable data loss (time) — not a people headcount

Field move

Continuity cannot restore a dependency it never listed.

Scenarios

Scenario 1 · Applied Scenario · CSP-11 D4.02

BIA omitted the single 480 V feed and the sole-source nitrogen blanket. Consequence?

Best action: BCP will not restore dependencies it never listed; single utilities belong in the BIA (and degraded modes in the ERP).

Why: Evaluate the best response. The business-impact analysis omitted the single 480-volt feed and the sole-source nitrogen blanket. Continuity will not restore dependencies it never listed, and the degraded electrical mode also belongs in the emergency plan. Exclude utilities because BIA covers only so…

Scenario 2 · Applied Scenario · CSP-11 D4.02

Strategy options: design a dual electrical feed this year, or buy a larger business-interruption policy. Best continuity Reduce?

Best action: Dual feed (system/design loss-reduction of downtime). Policy is transfer of money after the outage.

Why: Evaluate the best response. The continuity reduce move is a dual electrical feed this year. A larger business-interruption policy transfers money after the outage and does not restore the electrons. Buy more business-interruption coverage because a policy restores electric service. — More interrupt…

Scenario 3 · Applied Scenario · CSP-11 D4.02

Last sentence: cold site can run filling in 18 h (RTO target 24 h), but its latest recoverable historian snapshot is 48 h old; RPO target is 4 h. Status?

Best action: RTO passes at 18 h; a snapshot 48 h old fails the 4 h RPO — restoration speed and data age are separate.

Why: Evaluate the best response. The cold site can run filling in 18 hours against a 24-hour recovery-time target, so time passes. The newest historian snapshot is 48 hours old against a 4-hour recovery-point target, so data age fails. Those objectives are separate. Declare both objectives met because f…

Check before you leave

  • ✓ Separate emergency response, continuity and disaster recovery.
  • ✓ Rank functions by tolerated outage and safety dependencies.
  • ✓ State RTO and RPO with units and assumptions.
  • ✓ Test an alternate process and correct a dependency gap.
  • ✓ Evacuation rosters belong to emergency response; continuity plans address sustained disruption.
  • ✓ RTO is a time-to-restore target, RPO a data-age target.
